The most critical of industrial capacitors is the DC filter capacitor. This is a key component of modern variable speed drives. Modern variable speed drives use static inverters, where the switching action of the semiconductors generates many parasitic signals, so capacitors are needed in the line for filtering and eliminating ripples and harmonics. This self-healing metallised film capacitor can be used as a DC connection and harmonic filter for intermediate circuits, and also as an embedded and absorption capacitor in control circuits.
